Position: Sound Engineer/A1/A2/A1000 (you get the idea)
Sound Designer: Jay Hilton Location: Goodspeed Musicals Date: July 26-August 25 2019 |
Goodspeed Musicals is known for introducing new musicals into the world. It was a pleasure to work on one as thought provoking and beautiful as this. The creative team included Music and Lyrics by Brett Ryback, book by Eric Ulloa, and orchestration by August Eriksmoen. The musical follows an adaption of the real-life story of Andrew Forsthoefel who literally walked across the U.S. from coast to coast looking for answers and to understand the world around him. The show explores many unique sounds as the texture follows the music of the region from dueling flamenco guitars to country to rich sonic textures reminiscent of Copland.

This production created a few unique opportunities for me: I had to quickly learn and adapt to equipment and software I was unfamiliar with and always be on my toes for script changes that were sometimes delivered minutes before a performance. Goodspeed currently uses a Yamaha DM2000 FOH which I was unfamiliar with. I quickly had to learn and adapt to the quirks of a console that was not made for theater to mix a production that utilized almost all of the 96 inputs. I was also introduced to SFX6 as the primary playback and show control engine (which was a little bit of a learning curve coming from Qlab).
As the "A-everything" I was solely responsible for loading-in, mixing, A2ing, and troubleshooting the show. The show utilized 16 wireless mics for 11 actors with many using a different mic for some scenes depending on costume. The show had a 5 piece offstage band that played over 20 different instruments including probably the first ever Guitar 2/Horn book. |
Mixing Samples
As the designer's vision and the console necessitated, this show was mixed in a very different manner than some of my other productions.
