Throughout High School I developed a passion for music. I started to spend hours practicing in the band room during lunch, after school, or any other time I had. I started to play in many groups in and outside of school. Throughout High School, I played with the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, the Cincinnati Youth Symphony Orchestra (Philharmonic), the CCM prep Brass Choir, various Honor Bands and Orchestras, and the Blue Lake masterworks orchestra and staff band along with all my High School ensembles. I also began taking private lessons regularly since my eighth grade year with CCM students, a trombonist from the Dayton Orchestra, a CCM Prep teacher, and the principal trombonist from the Cincinnati Symphony during my Senior year.

I still pursue my passion for music through lessons with Mark Lusk at Penn State and participating in the Penn State Trombone Choir along with other ensembles. Recently, I have also been experimenting with combining sound recording and my trombone playing. I have recorded some multi-tracks of me playing some excerpts from major orchestral works. It has definitely taken some thought to figure out how to do this. For each one, I first find a recording online and import it into Logic. I then find the opening tempo and create a click track to count me in. I then route the audio to my headphones and watch the video while playing allowing me to stay in time with the recording. I do this for each part, add a little reverb, and then listen back to see what needs improvement. Doing this not only allows me to find areas to work on in my playing but also allows me to experiment with various microphones, positions, and reverbs. This process has given me a better ear in recording sounds and also has given me a new outlet to experiment with.

Cavatine:
Recorded April 15th, 2018 with two Cascade Fathead II mics in a blumlein technique configuration and an Audio Technica 4081 Active Ribbon mic. The two Fatheads went straight into a MOTU AVB ultralite preamp/AD and the AT 4081 went into a Grace m101 preamp before going to the MOTU for the AD conversion. A small amount of EQ was applied to the AT in Logic and reverb was added to all three microphones along with the necessary panning. |
